According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of 2015, 84.1 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for type 2 diabetes. Of particular concern, is the high prevalence of prediabetes among Latino/Hispanics. Recently, personalized medicine for the prevention of chronic disease, including diabetes, has been a topic of wide discussion. Though previous interventions have observed the role of acculturation, which is defined as the process by which individuals adopt the behaviors, values, and attitudes of a different culture, limited research has studied the influence of acculturation on the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of Latino/Hispanics toward personalized medicine. In an attempt to assess its influence, a narrative review of nine genetic and genomic studies with Latino/Hispanics of varying levels of acculturation was performed. Based on the findings from this review, Latino/Hispanics with lower levels of acculturation express interest in genetic and genomic testing despite limited knowledge of these concepts. In general, Latino/Hispanics feel favorably toward personalized medicine and feel comfortable sharing test results with immediate family members. Among those less acculturated, heredity was expressed through "blood talk" which indicates a perception that blood carries genetic information, and barriers related to language, time, medical mistrust, and fear of test results emerged (Sandberg et al., 2017). Lastly, the findings indicate that the provision of genetic and genomic education may increase personal motivation for lifestyle modification among those less acculturated. These findings may inform professionals on ways to tailor genetic and genomic services for the prevention of diabetes which meet the unique needs of Latino/Hispanics.
