The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of mild intensity chronic stairclimber exercise and the gestational diabetic diet on glucose metabolism in healthy sedentary pregnant women. A total of 16 subjects were randomised into either a diet and exercise group or an exercise alone group. At 16-20 weeks of gestation, the subjects underwent a fasted oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), a peak exercise test and a steady state exercise test based upon 30% of the VO$\sb2$ peak, which was then followed by another OGTT (SS+OGTT). The subjects embarked upon an 11-13 week program of mild intensity stairclimber (30% VO$\sb2$ peak), exercising 3-4 times a week. Subjects underwent a fasted OGTT and a SS+OGTT at 25-27 weeks and again at 34-36 weeks gestation in addition to a fasted OGTT at 2 months postpartum. Despite nutritional intake differences between the groups, plasma glucose and insulin responses showed no significant differences between the groups for the three testing periods, intimating that mild intensity stairclimber exercise did not improve glucose tolerance nor did it attenuate the plasma insulin response to a glucose load. Nevertheless, there was a significant decrease in pre to post exercise capillary glucose for both groups, demonstrating possible glucose modulating effects owing to the mild exercise. The modality of stairclimber at 30% VO$\sb2$ peak was comparable to that of the bicycle ergometer used by Weis (1997). Furthermore, the stairclimber program did not have any deleterious effects on birth outcome.
